Ned Patton, Ph.D., P.E.

Talented, charismatic, and accomplished Author, Scientist, Mechanical Engineer and Composite Materials Expert, Dr. Patton has been in the R&D and technology development business for more than 40 years.  He has worked at major National Laboratories and Government Labs.  His involvement with composite materials dates back at least 35 of those 40 years, and was strengthened when he did his Ph.D. work at the University of Delaware.  The Mechanical Engineering Department at U of Delaware runs a Consortium of Industry, Government, and Academic institutions focused on the manufacture of composites.  During his time at Delaware, he was the U.S. Army Liaison to this Consortium, since he was leading the development of composite material structures for Army large caliber weapon systems.

He has degrees from three different Universities:  a B.S. in Biology from the University of Oregon, B. S. and Masters degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Oregon State University, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Delaware.

Since graduating from U of Delaware, his work in technology development has been primarily focused on applications of composites, and he has become something of an expert in the use of composites in deep submergence applications.

Dr. Patton recently wrote a book about composites, “The String and Glue of our World” which is published by McFarland books.  This book takes the reader on a journey from the beginning of time to the present through the lens of an Engineer and Scientist with more than 40 years of experience, mostly with composite materials. Relating the structures seen in nature, the author explains both the why and the what of composites, where the ideas for them came from, and how Mother Nature has been using these ideas since the beginning of life on this wonderful planet.

Dr. Patton also recently received his Professional Engineering license from the State of California in Mechanical Engineering.  And, he has now created an engineering and consulting company in Sunnyvale, CA - Patton Engineering and Consulting, a subsidiary of Red Rooster Ltd.  While his experience is mostly in systems engineering, modeling, and structural analysis using highly engineered materials, he is an expert in the application of advanced composite materials to demanding structural applications, including undersea vehicles.

He is also available as an Expert Witness for intellectual property litigation, failure analysis and investigation, patent infringement and enforcement, and any litigation requiring the opinion and testimony of an experienced Professionally Licensed Mechanical Engineer with a deep background in engineering materials.
